Daraa, Syria...Closing the Circle

Daraa, Syria. This is where the anti-government movement began in Syria in March, 2011. Today, the Syrian Coalition made of Syrian Regime forces and Iran-backed militia  began marching toward Darra to "free it from terrorists". Unfortunately for them, the anti-government rebels stationed in Daraa are supported by American military forces. The United States issued a warning to the marching army to halt its attack immediately before they face consequences. Not sure where this one is going? If Russia intervenes on the side of the pro-government forces, this would place the Russian Army in direct and opposite side to the American troops. Not good at all!

Jerusalem

Jerusalem is Al-Quds in Arabic. For the Arabs, it is a sacred land. It is a holy land. Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven from Al-Quds and was given by God the commandment that every Muslim must pray five times daily. The United States has maintained its embassy outside Al-Quds out of respect to the Muslim religion and to the Arab countries. This might change during the current administration. Of course, the Israelis have a say into this too. They probably do not want to "rock the boat". This can be complicated for many reasons. First, the Iranians have troops in Syria (north of Israel) fighting along side the Syrian government. Second, the Lebanese "The Party of God" is backed by both Iran and Syria and they have fought Israel in the past. Third, to the Palestinians, Al-Quds is considered their Capital, at least in their minds and hearts for now. Forth, this would antagonize the American allies in the region (Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf countries). Fifth, the presence of the Russian troops in Syria adds a level of complication that is not needed now between the two superpowers. Sixth, all peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel would seize immediately. Simply stated, this is number one priority, and everything else depends on it. Seventh, the civil war in Syria might spread south to Israel as the rebels and the Syrian government share the same belief toward Al-Quds. Eighth, the terrorists in the region also share the same belief as the "good guys". Ninth, Al-Quds is perhaps the only thing that unites the World with the Arab world. The Europeans would not appreciate it if it happens. Tenth, this would place pressure on Jordan and Egypt to reconsider their peace pacts with Israel. And, just this last one is by itself a huge disaster.

A Very Brief Syrian Story

Since the latest Syrian Civil war that began in March 2011, some 11 million Syrians left their homeland to seek refuge somewhere else on this planet. One of those 11 million refugees was my mom. Yes my 82-year old mom had to leave our house in Damascus, Syria after a missile struck the first floor unit of the three-story building. My mom lived on the second floor, and our unit got damaged, but not beyond repair. Following the incident in 2014, my mom fled to Lebanon where she lived there at a Roman Catholic convent runs by nuns. Having raised Roman Catholic, she felt home at the convent. My brother began her immigration papers to the States in 2014, and after many months of waiting she finally got her "green card" and arrived to US. Her story is perhaps sounded an easy one. Indeed, in comparison to the other Syrian refugees who had to leave in overcrowded boats via the Mediterranean Sea, her story was easy. But the devil is in the details. When her building was hit by the missile she was at her unit. It was a horrifying experience for an 82-year old woman living alone. (This is not just "I fell and cannot get up" sort of things.) When she fled the city, she had to travel by roads and highways from Damascus to Beirut that are risky for travel due frequent attacks and military activities between the government troops and the rebels. When she arrived to the convent in Lebanon, she thought she would be there for a couple of months. Unfortunately, the couple of months became a couple of years. And, then her travel from Beirut to Boston, Massachusetts was a long trip for her to do alone at her age (she used to come here to visit us with my dad who took care of everything for her. Now he is gone since 2010, she had to do it on her own.) The immigration papers required her to make several trips back to Damascus from Beirut. That was also very hard for her to do under the given active war situation. We thank God for her arrival safely to the States. Next time you hear the words "Syrian Refugees" think about those 11 million stories like my mom's and then some.
